Bau Haus Dog Cafe

-For Dog Lovers Only-


There exists a cafe where dogs roam freely. They are allowed to sit in the chairs, walk on the window ledges and sit in your lap. This place is called the Bau Haus Dog Cafe, and over 20 different breeds walk freely in any given time. Most dogs live there permanently, and some used to be in movies and are now retired. Whatever the dog's past career, every dog got along with the other as though they were litter mates. You were flocked by them in a barking frenzy as soon as you walked through the door. When you sat down, the little ones ran up and planted themselves in your lap.




Of course I had to make friends with the cafe's golden retriever who kept trying to grab things off a table in the middle of the room and bring them to me. There was a huge dog sitting on a ottoman in the back of the cafe that looked more like a giant black wolf than a dog, and he was sitting there as though he owned the place, and I intruded in on his cafe. A graceful saluki glided by, toning down the effect and followed it to one of the tables. The best scene was when we saw a cat was making its way down cafe with a glint in his eye that said "what hell am I doing here?' There was never a moment when a dog was not by your side, and if one left, another came up to greet you as though they were taking turns.

Unconditional love was the theme of this cafe, not dogs!

Trade the Track Shoes for Taekwondo Belts

Arirang Taekwondo- While teaching in Seoul, my Korean immersion has extended to studing Marital Arts- Korean Taekwondo, with Round house kicks, wooden board breaking and the 'giant leap frog' excercise. I have hung up the track spikes and pole vault poles and traded them in for Taekwondo belts. The track skills have carried over well in martial arts! About 3 times a week I take an hour long subway ride to the north side of Seoul in a neighborhood called Samgakji.  The Dojang, (no, Dojo is Japanese) is apart of the Korean War Memorial Museum, and the Marital Arts center itself is one large, round room, with a sparring ring in the middle, a platform in the front of the room for demostrations and two huge wooden statues in the front that boarder a Korean flag. Kate Teacher, I Just S*** my Pants!!

So far my classes have been going well. I have really been connecting with my older kids. It's my kinders that still need some basic lessons. Usually if a kid asks to use the bathroom, I let them go. If they ask right after the whole class went on a bathroom break, or they have gone three times that day, I say no, because by then I know they are asking to go just so they can leave the room. One day, a boy in my kindergarten class named Dan asked to use the bathroom twice in one hour. When he asked me again, I said," no Dan, you have used it twice in one hour." Usually when I do let him go to the bathroom, he just wanders the hallways with no intention of using the bathroom. To prove a point I wasn’t going to let him do that anymore. Only, he had a more potent point to show me. When the class was getting ready to leave, putting on their outdoor shoes and packing their bags, Dan said in a rather quiet voice and holding on to his pants: “Kate Teacher, I went bathroom.” ...
